The state in 2026

Image generation has split into two camps:

• Midjourney (closed-source, subscription-only): commercial product, polished UI, gallery community
• FLUX by Black Forest Labs (open-source weights): runs locally or via Replicate / Fal / Together

Where Midjourney wins

• v6.1 produces consistently strong aesthetic output across styles
• --sref style references are the gold standard for series consistency
• Active community gallery shows other people's prompts and seeds
• "Stealth mode" on Pro+ keeps your work private

Where FLUX wins

• Open weights — you can run locally on a 24GB GPU
• Cheaper at scale: Replicate FLUX dev costs ~$0.003/image vs Midjourney $0.05+
• More control: ComfyUI nodes let you compose pipelines (LoRA, inpaint, outpaint) end-to-end
• No subscription — pay per image

When to use which

• Midjourney: marketing visuals, concept art, mood boards where aesthetic > control
• FLUX: production pipelines, batch generation, custom LoRA fine-tunes, on-prem use

Quality comparison

In side-by-side blind tests, FLUX 1.1 Pro and Midjourney v6.1 are within ~5% of each other on photorealism. Midjourney still wins on stylized illustration. FLUX wins on text-in-image rendering.
